The availability of New Zealand grown tamarillos depends on locations and pruning methods. In certain areas growers can prune for very early or very late crops. The peak of availability is in July and August.

The tamarillo is a sub-tropical plant and thrives in warm climates. In New Zealand it is grown mainly in coastal areas, concentrated in the North Island where risk of frosts is low.
